Showmax is a streaming service owned by South Africa’s MultiChoice, the same company that runs DStv and GOtv services. Showmax offers a wide variety of African and international content, including movies, TV shows, documentaries, and more. It is available in over 50 countries across Africa, including Kenya.
Plans
There are two Showmax subscription plans available in Kenya:
Showmax Mobile
This plan costs KES 300 per month and allows you to watch Showmax content on your mobile phone or tablet.
Showmax Standard
This plan costs KES 760 per month and allows you to watch Showmax content on up to five devices, including your mobile phone, tablet, laptop, and smart TV.
Showmax also offers a premium plan called Showmax Pro.
This plan costs KES 2,100 per month and includes all of the features of the Showmax Standard plan, including access to live games such as the Premier League and La Liga (no BundesLiga or Ligue 1). It, however, does not air Champions League matches, but does so in its native South Africa.
Showmax Pro also allows users to access live news channels.
Showmax also offers a 14-day free trial, so you can try out the service before you commit to a subscription.
Singing up
To sign up for Showmax in Kenya, you can visit the Showmax website or download the Showmax app. You will need to create an account and provide your payment information.
Once you have signed up for Showmax, you can start watching content immediately. You can browse the Showmax library by genre, country, or title. You can also create a watchlist of your favourite shows and movies.
Showmax is a great way to watch African and international content on demand. It is available on a variety of devices and offers a variety of subscription plans to suit your needs.
Original content
Showmax airs a number of original content, some of which have been tailored for the Kenyan market such as Kyallo Kulture, which is on its second season and reality TV show, the Real Housewives of Nairobi.
Issues
Showmax streams are only limited to two devices.
Showmax airs content in 720p only, whereas other platforms such as Netflix stream up to 4K and with HDR support.
Last year, Showmax streamed FIFA world cup matches at 4K, meaning it has the capacity to do so but hasn’t been able to replicate the same quality to its catalog of films and shows.
