In the dynamic realm of technological advancements, a noteworthy development is on the horizon as ChatGPT, the advanced language model, hints at becoming a default assistant app on Android, akin to Google Assistant.
Traditionally, Google Assistant has held the reins as the default assistant app on Android smartphones. However, Android’s flexible platform has always allowed users to opt for alternative apps to perform assistant functions. Now, with the rise of Language Model-based Assistants (LLMs), ChatGPT is evidently in the works to join the league of Android assistant apps.
Android users are no strangers to third-party assistant apps, with Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa having made their mark in the past. When set as the default assistant app, these alternatives seamlessly replace Google Assistant in long-press gestures for the home or power button, as well as swipe gestures when using Android’s gesture navigation. Importantly, this doesn’t eliminate access to Google Assistant, but users may need to utilize a shortcut available in the Play Store or find alternative access routes.
The latest version of the ChatGPT app, dissected by Android Authority, reveals a new activity – the OpenAI voice assistant activity. This triggers an overlay suggesting potential support for voice input, closely mirroring Google Assistant’s functionality. However, it’s important to note that this feature is not yet activated by default, and its functionality is still in the experimental phase.
