Airtel Africa has launched Nxtra by Airtel, a new data center business focused on meeting Africa’s growing data centre needs for the digital economy.

Nxtra plans to build a large network of data centres across Africa’s key cities alongside existing ones. These facilities will support the next generation of computing and adhere to security standards while providing scalable solutions to various entities, including global hyper-scalers, African enterprises, startups, SMEs, and governments.

Nxtra’s infrastructure will enhance digital service access, reduce data management costs, and promote innovation in Africa. It also supports data sovereignty requirements and local cloud services in Airtel Africa’s operating countries.

The first major facility in Lagos, Nigeria, will deliver 34 MW of power and is expected to go live in mid-2025.

Yashnath Issur, formerly of Amazon Web Services, has been appointed as Nxtra’s CEO, bringing 16 years of industry expertise to lead the team executing this vision.

Airtel Africa’s Group CEO, Segun Ogunsanya said: “A rapid increase in data centre capacity is needed to support the growth potential of Africa’s digital economy.  We’re proud to drive the future of Africa’s digital infrastructure, unlocking opportunities for businesses to grow and fuelling economic prosperity.”
