Government announces hike in Nairobi Expressway toll charges in New Year adjustments

The government has increased the Expressway toll booth charges by up to 100%. The shilling’s continued decline against the US dollar and other major currencies have been cited as the main reasons.

Ministry of Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen signed a gazette notice on 19th December 2023, announcing revised charges for the Nairobi Expressway. The new charges will be applicable to various entry sections of the road, with the transport authority keen on easing toll collection process and supporting infrastructure development and maintenance.

What are some of the new charges?

  • Eastern Bypass to Westlands: Ksh410
  • JKIA to Westlands: Ksh410
  • Mlolongo to Westlands: Ksh500
  • Haile Selassie to Westlands: Ksh250
  • Syokimau to Westlands: Ksh500
  • Southern Bypass to Westlands: Ksh330
  • Capital Center to Westlands: Ksh250
  • SGR to Westlands: Ksh410

Reasons

A major contributor to the hikes is the Kenyan shilling’s decline against the US dollar and other major currencies. The Kenyan currency lost value against prominent currencies such as the Euro, Pound Sterling, US Dollar, and Japanese Yen.
