Nigeria’s edtech trailblazer, AltSchool Africa, has expanded its reach to Kenya, marking its second venture into East Africa, following its earlier entry into Rwanda. The startup, founded in 2021, specializes in providing sought-after courses designed to equip Africans for global tech roles.
Taking the helm in Kenya is Tabitha Kayvu, who will lead the charge in the Kenyan market, identified by AltSchool Africa’s Co-founder and CEO, Adewale Yusuf, as its second-largest market after Nigeria.
Yusuf revealed that the decision to launch in Kenya was spurred by a significant surge in enrollments in the country. While specifics for each country were not disclosed, AltSchool Africa boasts a total of 60,000 learners spanning across 105 countries.
Online and offline learning platforms
Despite offering virtual education, the startup remains committed to fostering offline communities and partnerships for its learners. In Nigeria, this approach has proven successful, and the company intends to replicate this strategy in Kenya.
Bridging the skills gap
Nifemi Akinwamide, Head of Growth and Partnerships at AltSchool, affirmed ongoing discussions with Kenyan communities and organizations. With its expansion into Kenya, the edtech startup continues to play a pivotal role in bridging the skills gap and preparing individuals across the African continent for the demands of the global tech landscape.
From its inception, AltSchool Africa concentrated on delivering one-year diploma courses in software engineering. Evolving over time, the startup has expanded its course offerings to include disciplines such as data engineering, sales, fintech product management, and digital marketing.
The educational platform is structured around five distinct schools: Data, Engineering, Business, Product, and Creative Economy. AltSchool Africa’s fee structure varies but typically hovers around $80 per quarter, $30 per month, or $290 for those opting to pay the full amount upfront.
