Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) on Tuesday received 1,780 project abstracts for its 7th National Science and Technology Annual Exhibition in 2024. This represents a 138% increase in submissions compared to last year. The exhibition will take place between August 19th and 23rd.
The theme for this year’s exhibition is “Developing Sustainable Solutions for Climate Change.” It aims to inspire students to pursue STEM careers, showcase their scientific research and innovations, build networks, and develop skills for further research and commercialization.
The YSK program has reached over 250,000 students, involved more than 750 schools (including over 20 special needs schools), engaged more than 750 teachers, created over 600 STEM networks, and received over 1,000 student projects since its inception.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Micheál Martin, spoke at the event and praised the impact of the Irish BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (YSTE) and expressed support for YSK’s mission to inspire young minds in Kenya. Martin stated that Ireland believes in the power of education and innovation and is proud to support initiatives like YSK.
YSK has awarded prizes to 210 students, including thirteen scholarships for tertiary education. They have also supported two students in obtaining trademarks for their winning projects and organized six national exhibitions and five STEM bootcamps.
