In a bid to shore up the security in log-in activities, Whatsapp and Uber will add passkeys to biometric measures to prevent personal information breach. Thus, on devices that have enabled features such as fingerprint or face unlock, it will be available to employ them for your your device’s added security.
Passkeys are more resistant to phishing
With passkeys, users should expect better protection from phishing, thus better information security. Google has reported that they are 40% faster than passwords, but still have the password option option available if one needs it.
Before you can link your Uber or Whatsapp to your browser or desktop app, you will have to first unlock the apps first on your phone using your fingerprint or face ID before proceeding. As such, if someone has your device and intends to connect to the web version to continue recieving messages, they have to unlock the device physically first.
Compatible devices
This is welcome news to Apple users, with the feature set as default with iOS 14 with either Touch ID or Face ID, and any Android devices that have biometric authentication enabled. Users without the feature will have to link the apps as usual. However, rest assured that Whatsapp is not collecting the data, but rather using it to prevent unauthorised access to private information.
Other apps that already use the passkey are Youtube, Google Search, Maps, eBay and even Uber.
