Wasoko’s redundancy notice affects over 100 employees after merging with MaxAB

Wasoko, a Kenyan e-commerce platform, executed a redundancy that affected 100 employees after merging operations with Egypt’s MaxAB. The layoffs were announced on December 5th, 2023. The employees had a month to set their affairs in order, as their last day at work was January 4th, 2024.

The firings were not communicated via email or memo but were announced through a Google Meet meeting, seemingly to guard the privacy of the matter, people close to the matter told TechBooth Africa.

Most of the affected employees were working in engineering and product development. The company’s CTO was also affected by the layoffs and the VP of engineering and head of engineering.

In terms of severance, the affected people will receive one month’s salary in lieu of notice, severance pay of 15 days for each completed year, and accrued leave days payment.

The MaxAB team will take over tech operations.
