Kenya asked to learn from Estonia’s 100% digital governance model

Estonia

Estonia has fully digitalised its government services, achieving 100% online availability by December 2024. This includes services like divorce, which can now be completed online.

Kenya and other countries are encouraged to learn about Estonia’s digital advancements through the e-Estonia Briefing Centre in Tallinn.

Estonia’s digital system relies on a state-issued digital identity (e-ID), used for daily tasks such as voting, signing contracts, and accessing health records.

Over 5,000 government services in Kenya, including birth registration, passport processing, and visa applications, are accessible online via the e-citizen portal.

Estonia’s digital divorce service allows couples to apply online, with 53% of applications filed digitally since its launch. The service includes a 30-day reflection period, tools for dividing property, and guidance on custody arrangements.

Estonia’s digital governance has seen widespread adoption, with 85% of birth registrations and 56% of marriage applications completed online.

Estonia and Kenya are enhancing collaboration, with Estonian companies partnering with Kenyan firms to digitize educational resources and expand online businesses. Kenyan students have also received scholarships to study e-gaming in Estonia, aiming to develop content for the Kenyan market.
