South African entertainment company MultiChoice has announced DStv Stream. As the name suggests, the platform will enable users to stream content on their devices. Those who have been using the DStv app, or formerly, DStv Now, should not be surprised because DStv Stream is simply a rebrand of the DStv app – and all they need to do to access DStv Stream is just update their current app. The announcement is significant as it demonstrates the company’s continued focus on customers who prefer accessing content via the internet rather than satellite signals (as with its flagship product – DStv).
According to a statement by MultiChoice Kenya, the new DStv Stream ‘comes with enhanced personalization to discover content on subscribers’ profiles and a seamless, user-friendly and simpler streaming experience. Viewers will also have the ability to switch soundtracks to their local languages where available, including live sports commentary.’ This makes it look like other streaming services like Netflix – but with perks like live sports streaming.
“As part of DStv’s enduring commitment to creating value and enhancing the viewing experience for customers, DStv Stream brings the ultimate streaming experience right to your fingertips. This all-inclusive entertainment platform continues to bring the best in local, international, sports, and kid’s content from wherever the viewer is,” noted Mr. Ronald Baraka, Head of Marketing, MultiChoice Kenya.
Showmax is still here
Even more interesting is that MultiChoice also operates another streaming platform called Showmax. This product was primarily launched to rival Netflix and has been experiencing substantial growth, receiving the same level of attention as other MultiChoice services, including live sports streaming and live television.
Recently, Multichoice made a significant announcement about their partnership with the well-known US media giant COMCAST, which owns NBCUniversal, and the UK-based SKY. The collaboration aims to create a new platform called Showmax 2.0. Peacock will power this platform and will be primarily owned by Multichoice, holding a 70% stake, while the remaining 30% will be owned by the UK and US partners, who bought it for $30 million.
Showmax 2.0 is expected to be a game-changer in the streaming industry, combining Peacock’s advanced and scalable technology with Multichoice’s vast collection of local and global content from its partners. With this combination, the platform is set to rival leading global streaming platforms like Netflix.
