Connecting Africa to opportunities by closing the digital divide

Africa’s economic future depends on how well it integrates into the global digital economy. Yet much of the continent still lacks the digital infrastructure needed to participate fully. Unreliable internet, costly data, and widespread use of 2G and 3G devices continue to hold back access to new technologies such as AI.

Kenyan deep tech startup Fastagger is tackling this gap by developing software that allows AI models to run efficiently on low-power devices, including affordable smartphones. Its system removes the need for constant internet connectivity or high-end cloud infrastructure, making AI tools usable in rural and bandwidth-limited areas.

This approach enables practical use cases across sectors. Health workers can access diagnostic tools offline, teachers can use AI learning apps in low-resource schools, and farmers can receive real-time guidance without an internet connection.

Fastagger’s work extends to small businesses, too. With mobile money driving a $1.7 trillion market, many African SMBs still manage customer data manually. Fastagger’s AI business assistant offers mobile-based customer engagement and analytics tools for as little as $1 to $5 per month. The tool automates loyalty programmes and provides customer insights, cutting manual processes from eight steps to two.

Supported by Microsoft’s Africa Transformation Office, Fastagger has received technical mentorship through Azure AI, IoT and GitHub, as well as business guidance and partnerships with Technvest, Cloudmania, and NVIDIA.

Fastagger’s AUNI system, integrated into Safaricom’s M-PESA Business App, now supports over 2,500 MSMEs using entry-level Android devices. The tool helps businesses organise data, visualise performance and understand customer behaviour.

By enabling AI to run on basic smartphones, Fastagger is expanding digital access and creating new opportunities for small businesses across Africa.
