Mastercard has opened its first office in Uganda as part of its expansion in East Africa. The Kampala office aims to strengthen collaboration with local stakeholders and support digital payments and financial inclusion.
Uganda’s economy is projected to grow by 6.2% in 2025. Mastercard’s presence aligns with the government’s ‘Digital Uganda Vision,’ which promotes digital technologies for national development. The company has signed an MoU with the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance to accelerate digital adoption in government services.
Mastercard holds a Payment System Operator (PSO) License from the Bank of Uganda under the National Payment Systems Act 2020. This allows it to offer settlement and clearing operations for domestic transactions.
The company is working with the Uganda Bankers Association and has hosted the Community Pass Customer Summit to advance digital financial services. The Kampala office joins Mastercard’s existing locations in Cairo, Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, Port Louis, and Accra.
