BasiGo is expanding its operations in Rwanda with the delivery of 28 new electric buses, the first batch arriving in Kigali in April.
The fleet will serve the city and inter-city routes. After securing capital last October, the company plans to deploy 100 electric buses across Rwanda in 2025. Rwandan bus operators looking to replace diesel buses or expand their fleets have made over 360 reservations.
To support this, BasiGo is expanding its charging infrastructure, upgrading the Rwandex depot to provide 1 MW of power for charging 25 buses nightly. Additional charging stations will be set up nationwide for inter-city operations. BasiGo’s Pay-As-You-Drive model includes charging, service, maintenance, and insurance, with a 90% uptime guarantee.
BasiGo launched its electric bus pilot in Rwanda in December 2023 and has grown its reservation book to over 360 units. The company has appointed Jones Kizihira as Head of Vehicle Asset Finance to develop financing solutions for electric bus adoption.
The deployment of 100 electric buses is expected to cut carbon emissions by 3,000 tons annually and create jobs in Rwanda, aligning with the country’s Vision 2050 sustainability goals.
