The Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology is on the verge of finalizing revisions to broadcasting regulations, paving the way for the integration of Digital Sound Broadcasting (DSB) technology.
Radio is still a favoured medium
During the conference organized by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), Engineer Kundo reported that radio coverage now spans an impressive 55% of Tanzania’s geographical expanse, excluding wildlife reserves and forests. The Broadcasting Services Section manager at TCRA echoed the benefits of DSB technology, anticipating optimized radio broadcasting services that transcend reliance on radio spectrum frequencies.
In light of the highlighted benefits of the technology, this innovation is poised to empower service providers to reach every corner of the country, overcoming physical barriers like mountains, terrains, buildings, or trees.
Upholding ethical programming in broadcast content
The conference’s collective resolution underscores the commitment to uphold ethical standards among broadcasting entities and eliminate content violating norms. This initiative was prompted by concerns raised by veteran radio presenters associated with Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam, expressing discontent over the erosion of broadcasting and media ethics across the nation.
Abdalla Majura, representing veteran broadcasters through their umbrella organization, Wakongwe wa RTD, urged the government to restore broadcasting ethics and uphold Tanzanian values.
In a broader context, the conference emphasized the importance of disseminating high-quality content related to election activities and development in the upcoming Local Government Authority and general elections. Jacob Mwenga, Manager of Ice Broadcasting Station in Makambako, Njombe, noted that Tanzania’s broadcasting sector’s advancements would be significant as new technologies are embraced and improvement strategies implemented.
