Qona DT Sacco cuts final ties with Safaricom, relocates headquarters

Qona DT Sacco, formerly Safaricom Sacco, has moved its head office from the Safaricom Care Centre to Goodman Plaza on Waiyaki Way, marking the final step in its separation from the telco after more than two decades of association.

The shift comes months after the Sacco unveiled its new name and identity, signalling a push to redefine itself as a standalone financial institution. Founded in 2001 by a group of Safaricom employees, the Sacco has since evolved into a regulated deposit-taking Sacco with over 18,000 members and assets exceeding KES 11.5 billion.

Qona is positioning itself for a wider audience beyond its original employee base. The Sacco says the new name, drawn from the Swahili word kona—meaning corner—captures its goal of being ever-present for its members.

Chairman George Hunja described the rebrand as a shift toward a more modern, responsive Sacco model, no longer tethered to a parent institution.

The move also reflects broader changes within Kenya’s cooperative sector, where long-standing workplace-based Saccos are rethinking their identity, reach, and service delivery in response to increased competition and shifting member expectations.
