Liquid brings a 1000km fibre link connecting Ethiopia to Nairobi’s data Centres

The fibre link, stretching over 1000 kilometers between Kenya and Ethiopia, opens up a world of opportunities for Ethiopian businesses.

Liquid Intelligent Technologies has unveiled two new and redundant reliable terrestrial routes – one connecting Kenya to Ethiopia and the other linking Zambia to Malawi. This will see better regional connectivity for the economic development of these nations.

The fibre link, stretching over 1000 kilometers between Kenya and Ethiopia, opens up a world of opportunities for Ethiopian businesses. They can now access data centers and cloud services in Nairobi, Kenya, without the need for data to leave the continent. This connectivity is also reinforced by a 711-kilometre link between Zambia and Malawi, providing a direct and dependable connection to content caches and data centers in South Africa.

Adil El Youssefi, CEO Rest of Africa at Liquid Intelligent Technologies, shares, “The business landscapes in Kenya and Ethiopia are swiftly embracing digital technologies. This new connection paves the way for trade and investments between these two remarkable nations in our region. For Liquid Kenya, this rising demand aligns with the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Digital Superhighway Initiative. Our contribution of this newly lit fiber spanning 1000 kilometers is our first step in supporting private sector investment in this flagship project.”

In collaboration with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) and Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), Liquid’s new link bridges Nairobi and Mega in southern Ethiopia, with a capacity of four terabytes per second. This enhances the connectivity on the Kenya-Ethiopia route.

Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Group CEO of Cassava Technologies, said, “Every endeavor undertaken by Cassava Technologies aims to realize our vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no African behind. The completion of these fiber links represents another milestone for Liquid as it continues to lay the groundwork for economic growth through increased access to high-speed connectivity.”

This fibre network brings some advantages to Kenya and Ethiopia in terms of connectivity performance and accessibility. It extends its reach to underserved towns like Suswa, Sereolipi, Ndaragwa, and Marsabit, in addition to Nairobi and Mega.
