A few years ago, Google stopped giving people free storage for its entire product portfolio. When you open a new email, you get free 15 GB of cloud storage. Once you exhaust that, you must buy more storage, billed monthly or annually. This never happened, as people could upload pictures to Google Photos for free, albeit at lower quality. Now, when Google was certain it had roped in users into these merits, it introduced a standard subscription to Google One for new photo uploads, Drive storage and email (because they all used the free 15GB of storage). This was actually a smart move because Google knew people would never leave their emails for new ones (just for another 15 GB of free storage). It is why many of us now pay for storage and will likely do so until circumstances deem it otherwise.
At first, the base 100 GB of cloud storage cost KES 200. However, as of today, customers in Kenya will be paying more after the company announced that it will be them more, starting October 2023. “Google LLC is increasing the price of your subscription ‘Google One (200 GB)’ from Ksh 300.00/month to Ksh 380.00/month starting on 26 October 2023. You’ll automatically be charged the subscription price (plus any taxes) to the payment method provided until you cancel,” Google said in an email sent to users.
