Kei car review: 2016 Daihatsu Mira

Due to an increase in choices in urban mobility and the need for cheaper alternatives in motoring, kei cars are becoming a common sight on roads. They form a majority of taxi businesses due to their low running and maintenance costs.

The DAIHATSU-MIRA is a comfortable and economic choice for light errands and urban mobility

Whenever the discussion comes to kei cars, the Daihatsu Mira is a top pick. The E:S badge, which stands for “E”co (ecology and economy) and “S”mart, differentiates the LA300 first generation from its successors. Due to its popularity, the Mira has been rebranded and rebadged as the Subaru Plio, and the Toyota Pixis Epoch.

Interior

The Mira is generously accommodative in the front and the rear passenger spaces, in both head room and leg space. This is despite its small and compact size. However, its boot space is on the smaller side to allow for comfort in the passenger space.

Exterior

The Mira is well designed for a kei car, with smooth lines that complement its compact shape. Its headlights are well placed and the front grill has a simple design without any frills. The front and rear overhangs are quite small, which improve the approach angle and exit angle when going over bumps or curbs. Additionally, the Mira comes with 14 inch wheels that help in faster acceleration and maintaining speeds. What’s more, with its small wheel base, the Mira can maneuver any corner, and park anywhere.

Power and performance

Power from a 660 cc (0.6L) DHOC engine may seem unimpressive by many standards. Yet, the Dynamic Variable Valve Timing technology adds a bit more oomph, making it surprisingly easy to climb up slopes without having to thrash it. Moreover, the DVVT-i technology helps the engine adapt to different driving conditions depending on the load, with efficiency at lower rpms, and sporty performance at high rpm.

All this is powered through a CVT transmission, with a fuel economy of up to 25-30 km per litre. So, if you need a reliable and comfortable car for your taxi business, or a cheap addition to use in your home errands, look no further.
