Six months into its national AI literacy programme, Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) has trained 170 secondary school teachers from counties such as Nakuru, Mandera, Tana River, and Wajir. The training is expected to reach over 3,400 students.
YSK is working with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, using resources from the Experience AI curriculum, a global project developed with Google DeepMind. Google.org is funding the initiative.
The programme focuses on equipping teachers with practical AI knowledge, including introducing basic concepts and using AI tools in the classroom. The goal is to embed AI learning into regular school lessons and prepare students to use emerging technologies.
The effort comes ahead of the eighth YSK National Science and Technology Exhibition, which will be held from 5 to 9 August 2025 in Nairobi. More than 250 students will compete across four categories: technology, biological and ecological sciences, chemical, physical and mathematical sciences, and social and behavioural sciences.
Winners will receive university scholarships and participate in an educational trip to Ireland. The event is expected to draw 3,000 participants.
Since 2018, YSK has reached over 250,000 students in 850 schools. Its programmes target students in all 47 counties, including those from marginalised and refugee communities.
