It has been a few months since Safaricom revised its Home Fibre packages. The company doubled speeds for some plans. While the new offers seem fair, they still don’t match the value for money seen in other countries.
Safaricom’s push to recover its fibre investment is understandable. But with the service running for nearly a decade, it’s possible the company has already recouped most of its costs. Safaricom doesn’t disclose this information.
One major change was the introduction of a 1 Gbps package targeting heavy users. It is the first of its kind in Kenya and comes at a steep price of KES 20,000 per month.
Many people quickly asked if this price guarantees a dedicated link or if the package is still subject to Fair Usage Policy like the other plans. It turns out the 1 Gbps package is capped at 1TB of data. After hitting that limit, speeds drop to 3 Mbps.
The table below breaks down this and other packages.
PACKAGE | FIBRE SPEED | MONTHLY COST | FUP LIMIT | SPEED AFTER FUP | SECURE NET |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bronze | 15 Mbps | KES 2,999 | 500 GB | 1 Mbps | N/A |
Silver | 30 Mbps | KES 4,100 | 1 TB | 3 Mbps | Opt-in |
Gold | 80 Mbps | KES 6,299 | 1 TB | 3 Mbps | Included |
Diamond | 500 Mbps | KES 12,499 | 1 TB | 3 Mbps | Included |
Platinum | 1 Gbps | KES 20,000 | 1 TB | 3 Mbps | N/A |
