Through its foundation, telco Safaricom has revealed plans to invest up to KES 170 million to push for community investment that will see up to 1.6 million locals benefit from the project.
Safaricom foundation is allocating KES 100 million to support Kenyans who want to impact their communities positively. The fund will be channeled through the Foundation’s sustainable philanthropy programs, Ndoto Zetu, Pamoja, and Usamaria.
Ndoto Zetu, now entering its fifth phase, aims to support individual Kenyans to bring to life their dreams and aspirations for their communities. This could include building a school, providing clean water, or starting a business.
Besides Ndoto Zetu, the foundation invests in two other community programs: Pamoja and Usamaria. Pamoja is a scheme that allows Safaricom employees to choose a community project of their choice to support. The Foundation has set aside KES 50 million for this program. Usamaria is an initiative that supports patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by offsetting their medical bills in public hospitals. The foundation has set aside KES 20 million for this program.
The foundation is calling on all Kenyans who have a dream for their community to submit their proposals. Submissions have already been opened and will run until August 11th.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndwega said, “The transformation we have seen since the inception of Ndoto Zetu affirms that Kenyans are very passionate about positively impacting their communities. Each dream we help fulfill translates to thousands of lives being uplifted, so we are keen to continue partnering with Kenyans to transform lives.”
