Britam’s innovation arm, BetaLab, has selected five startups from Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda for its 2025 accelerator, marking its first region-wide challenge. The firms will join a 60-day programme tied to Britam’s business units as the insurer tests products in health, payments, agriculture and climate risk.
The challenge drew more than 150 applications from startups with existing traction. Fifteen finalists pitched to a panel that included Britam executives, investors and sector specialists after a month-long venture development bootcamp.
The selected companies are:
MobiKlinic (Uganda)
A platform for booking medical appointments and accessing virtual care.
Paytota (Uganda)
A payments gateway that unifies mobile money, bank and card acceptance.
Afya Lead (Tanzania)
Provider of micro-health cover for informal workers through its Pamoja Bima product.
Rada 360 (Tanzania)
A tool that uses satellite imagery and AI to support climate-smart farming for farmers, lenders and insurers.
ISARO Econext (Rwanda)
A service linking organisations to smallholder farmers for tree-planting projects with real-time monitoring.
Alongside the accelerator, the cohort will receive technology credits and access to Britam’s regional network. The initiative supports Britam’s strategy to test cross-border products and build a pipeline of startups that can plug into its insurance and financial services operations.
